BUY IT NOW is a film in two distinct parts, both telling essentially the same story. A sixteen year old girl named Chelsea Magan has decided to sell her virginity online to the highest bidder. The first half of the film is done in the style of a documentary, while the second half is a narrative. Together, they paint a complete picture of a girl: who she is and why she is doing what she is doing.
THE DOCUMENTARY
In the 30 minute documentary-styled part of the film, experience Chelsea’s journey first-hand, and the days leading up to and following the sale of her virginity captured on her mini-DV camera.
THE NARRATIVE
The 30 minute narrative portion of BUY IT NOW steps back and tells the story in a more structured manner. The interaction between Chelsea and the man who purchases her virginity is dealt with in greater depth. This section won the Cinefondation Prize at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.
