The Devil Came on Horseback beats Hunger to Award
This year at The Index on Censorship Film Award nominees included Hunger, Dir. Steve McQueen (Pathe) and The Devil Came on Horseback, Dir. Ricki Stern (Dogwoof).
The awards were presented on 21 April at Kings Place, London. The ceremony was hosted by Index on Censorship Chair Jonathan Dimbleby, with a keynote speech by Sir David Hare.
Hunger has won many an award this year, and is certainly a stand out film, but tonight was a victory for the underdog as documentary The Devil Came on Horseback,
Directed by Ricki Stern, Anne Sundberg won. A documentary that exposes the genocide raging in Darfur, Sudan as seen through the eyes of a photographer Brian Steidle.
Index on Censorship Chief Executive John Kampfner commented: ‘The Freedom of Expression Awards focus attention on activists, writers and film makers around the world who actively promote free expression, often in the most difficult circumstances. Index on Censorship is delighted to recognise their efforts at this increasingly high-profile annual event.’
